Our Prayers & Praises (05/09/2013)
Ernest Elliott, formerly a pastor in the North District now retired, was injured in an accident at his home. While cutting down a very tall tree on their property, a large limb fell and landed on Ernest. He was life flighted to LSU Hospital in Shreveport, LA where he received excellent care. His ear had to be reconstructed and he amazingly had no internal head injuries. He is back home in Texarkana recuperating. His wife Glenda, praised the hospital doctors and staff. She want to hi to everyone in the district and to thank everyone for their prayers.
Rev. Mike Fraley will be traveling to Austin on May 21 and stopping along the way in the city of West, Texas. His churches, Naples First UMC and Omaha UMC will be preparing a poster board “Prayer Card” for the people of West. If your church would like to make cards of encouragement, Rev. Fraley will be happy to carry your greetings to the people of the congregation of West First United Methodist Church. He will need your cards by May 20. CLM Les and Nelda Colley’s one year old granddaughter has suddenly begun having seizures. The insurance company will not okay a trip to Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. They are taking a wait and see if she has another one approach. Please keep her in your prayers
Rev. James McMillan, Linden UMC, had double knee replacement in Texarkana last week and is still at HealthSouth doing rehab.

Revs. Drs. Randy and Gary Fitzgerald’s mother, Mrs. Orell Fitzgerald passed away Saturday morning. Funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 at Elkhart First UMC. She was 96 years old
Mrs. Juanita Dean, longtime member of Mims Chapel United Methodist Church, passed away on February 11. Her celebration service will be held at 2 PM on March 2 at Mims Chapel UMC.
Mrs. Pinkie Turner, mother of Rev Steve Turner, is doing well after surgery today. Mrs. Turner resides at Magnolia Nuring Facility in Jefferson, Texas.

Rev. Ann Fields’ doctors have released her from the hospital today. Ann did have a heart attack but there was no damage. Prayers for a healthier year.
Mr. Mike May, the building caretaker of the district office in Longview, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Prayers for healing.
District Superintendent Rev. Bill Taylor has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the Men of Strength Award as the Texas Man of the Year. The award will be presented at the Men of Strength Program on Tuesday, February 19 at 11 am at the Juluis S Scott, Sr., Chapel on the campus of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas in this the college’s 140th Anniversary year. This program honors men who have distinquished themselves in various areas and have made significant contributions in their career choices.

Rev. Ann Fields of Pittsburg North Avenue UMC had a heart attack yesterday and is in Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview, Texas, room 2330. She had surgery today to investigate the problem. Please pray for renewed health.
Mr. Leland Crowley, longtime member of Harleton UMC, is home recuperating from hip surgery. He is resting and has home health care.
Retired pastor, Rev Walter Langham passed away last week. His funeral was Friday, February 8 at Danville UMC in Kilgore.
Roger Frazier, Rev Helen Frazior’s husband had hernia surgery last week. He is home and doing well.
Don Holt had surgery at Good Shepherd Longview to treat an infection from a spider bite on is hand that had entered his bone.
Rev. James Fleet, Grange Hall UMC, will have lapband surgery on February 28.

CLM Romnie Scott at New London UMC: Romnie’s mother in law, Mrs Emma Scott, passed away this week. Her funeral will be tomorrow, Tuesday, November 20 at 10 am at Center Presbyterian Church in Longview. Prayers for her husband, Steve and family.
Rev. Ross Hyde of Maud/Old Boston UMCs: His father Mr. Doug Hyde, passed away and memorial services will be Saturday, November 24 at 2 PM at Tatum UMC.
We are very happy to report that our Thanksgiving Bazaar was a big success. We raised over $1,200 for youth programs. Kate did an Alternative Gift Market and will send nearly $300 to Heifer International. We will send a check to UMCOR’s Sandy program this week. Sunday we formed a relationship with Child Advocacy Center in Gregg and Harrison counties. I am happy to inform you that Diane Lothrop (FUMC Pittsburg’s Childrens Ministry Director) and I met with Judy Pollan (Pittsburg ISD Superintendent) two weeks ago to ask her what our church could do to serve the school program. After some brainstorming and discussion we came up with Adopt an Athlete. A program where our church members adopt an athlete/band for the entire season that child is participating in a sports program be it basketball, track, softball or football. Former North District part time local pastor, Bruce “Ty” Mckinnon of Elysian Fields Bethel UMC, passed away today in Good Shepherd Hospital. His wife Debbie covets your prayers for her and their family. A memorial service for Bruce “Ty” McKinnon will be held at Downs Funeral Home Chapel in Marshall on Tuesday, October 16 at 4:00 PM. Visitation will be at 3:00 PM.

Update on Joe Turner, Harleton UMC from his wife Kate (Joe had quadruple bypass surgery yesterday):
I spent an hour with Joe this morning and he looks great. They had him up in a chair and will have him up and walking by now. They will transfer him out of ICU and put him back over in the Cardiac & Vascular Institute side today. His color is terrific. He is in some pain, but that is to be expected. It is amazing that they can do this major surgery without being so invasive – so different than the “old” days. Thank you so much for your prayers and support! All is going well.
Pastor of Marshall Crossroads UMC, Rev. Don Nicholson’s grandson, Bryce is in hospital in Dallas. The doctors removed one kidney and found no cancer in his bone marrow. Don and his wife Debbie continue to recuperate nicely from their health issues as well.

Joys and Praise as we have received an update on the health of Kristen Bedevian, daughter of Rev. Mike Bedevian of Pittsburg First UMC. After many different tests the results are that Kristen does not have MS as earlier thought. Her vision has returned and her new medications have kept the headaches away. Kristen is back at work and also returned to her school studies working on her Masters Degree.

Prayer request for my mother, Mary Hyde. She has been battling breast cancer. She has had it remove from the left, then a tumor from the brain and now they have found it in the right breast area. She has faith and a great spirit, but I know it would help her to know that others are praying to.

Rev. Don Nicholson of Marshall Crossroads is home recuperating from viral meningitis. His wife Debbie is home also recuperating from foot surgery. They have been blessed with friends to supply meals and help. Prayers for a quick recovery are welcomed.
Retired pastor Rev. Dow Harleston has been moved to Clarewood House to recuperate from a stroke. Last year he moved to live with his son in Houston.

Sharon McMillan, Linden UMC: I just wanted to ask you to keep my dad, Rev. Durwood Bristow, (retired pastor at Coronet) in your prayers. He had his first chemo last Tuesday, and is in room 2218 at Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview with pneumonia today…because of the risk of infections, we’re not really asking for visitors, but we would love to have your prayers! Thanks so much!

Bill Henderson, member of Naples, FUMC and formerly very active on district committees has died. He was 92. His funeral services were today. He was a great man and will be missed by many.
Joe Turner, CLM Candidate at Harleton UMC, will have surgery Tuesday, July 17 to clean out blocked carotid arteries at Longview Regional Hospital. He will go home on Wednesday. In two weeks Joe will return for bypass surgery. We will keep everyone posted on his progress and we covet your prayers for renewed health.
Rev. John Barfield’s grandson, Blake Slade, had surgery recently and will have to be in a wheelchair for about a month.
From DeKalb UMC: Pam Wintermute’s dad is recuperating well at home and getting around fine. Doug Wintermute’s dad is doing well also from his recent heart episode. They adjusted his meds and he has bounced right back.

Mr. James Donham, father of Pam Wintermute, had a heart attack today and will be transferred to a hospital in Abilene, Texas. Pam is the spouse of Rev. Doug Wintermute of DeKalb FUMC. They covet your prayers for Mr. Donham and the family.
Congratulations to Rev. Dan Sledge and Ms. Jane Taylor who were married last Friday by District Superintendent Bill Taylor at Grange Hall United Methodist Church in Marshall, Texas. Mr and Mrs Dan Sledge will reside in Marshall. May God bless their new union.

Joe Turner, Lay Supply Pastor to Harleton UMC, will have angioplasty at 11am at Longview Regional Hospital on Tue. July 10th. Hopefully they will fix blockage(s) then if a bypass is required Joe will be sent home for several days to allow the blood thinners to leave his system. All is in God’s hands. We covet your prayers.

Mr. George Hutcherson of Hallsville First United Methodist Church passed away Sunday, May 20. He fought a long and hard battle with cancer. Mr. Hutcherson and his wife, Donna Dean were long time Partners In Mission workers, serving many years at the Four Corners Mission in Arizona. Funeral plans are pending.

Mary Brannen Garrett passed away Sunday, April 29, 2012 following a long illness at Cornerstone Retirement Community in Texarkana, TX. Mary was born October 27, 1928. Mary was the wife of retired district superintendent, Jim Garrett and widow of Rev. James Brannen. Her body will be interred in Lufkin, TX at the Garden of Memories Cemetery on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 2:00 pm service. Memorial services will be held in College Station, TX at A&M United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 10:00 am, with a reception immediately following the service in the Church Parlor.
