Food Drive

Ladies,

Hope everyone is doing well. I wanted to take a minute let you all know that we will have a food drive at annual conference to benefit the Galveston County Food Bank. I have been told that we will have a space to collect donations in the lobby of the convention center near registration. I am sending with BT copies of the attached flyer that I hope he gives to everyone in attendance at the district meetings to start spreading the word. Diane wants us to be giving back to the community as we converge on Galveston in a few weeks. We will be taking monetary donations but she hopes to be able to see lots of 15 oz. canned goods arriving to fill the donation boxes.

We would appreciate your help to remind people of this mission project on your website or in group e-mails as we draw closer to the opening service at annual conference. Also, we need volunteers to help greet people and take the donations. My schedule is attached and you can see I have very few volunteers at this point though I have been promoting the need for several weeks. If you can promote the need for volunteers in any way I will greatly appreciate it. Just have anyone who might say they will help to e-mail me their availability. Thanks for your help.

5 Stars of Excellence in Christian Education

It’s time to submit the forms for this year’s awards – the deadline is May 7!

The 5 Star award is an annual program for United Methodist Churches sponsored by the Texas Chapter of Christian Educators Fellowship and the Texas Annual Conference Committee on Faith-Forming Relationships as a tool to support local congregations in:

+ evaluating the effectiveness of the educational ministries,

+ developing strategies for growth, and

+ celebrating and promoting achievements and strengths of your ministries.

The deadline for returning the completed application is May 7, 2012. Awards are presented during Annual Conference. Churches that have received the award in the past are encouraged to participate every year.

Application forms are attached and available online at txcumc.org (Congregational Excellence) or tccef.org. Forms can be completed by lay leaders and staff in children’s, youth or adult ministries, the Church Council, or any group overseeing educational ministries.

A “Rising Star Award” is for churches growing toward meeting the 5-Star criteria. The “Shooting Star Award” is for 5 Star congregations reaching for a higher level.

Plans are underway for SUMMER Boys and Girls Chrysalis Flights!

Boys Flight July 20-22 @ FUMC Sulphur Springs

Girls Flight July 27-29 @ FUMC Paris

Chrysalis is the youth version of the Walk to Emmaus and is a great opportunity for students to spend three days with other youth and adults growing in their faith. The aim of this weekend is spiritual renewal expressing itself in spiritual leadership in the local church.

This flyer provides more information about Chrysalis (to give to people who are interested) and this flyer can be used to ”advertise” the flights – post it in your youth room and around your church! Put the information in your Sunday bulletins and church newsletters! Applications for TEAM SERVICE and APPLICATIONS TO ATTEND a WEEKEND can be accessed online as well.

Books Alive!

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear author Missy Buchanan talk about her new book, My Story My Song, co-written with Lucimarian Roberts (mother of GMA co-anchor Robin Roberts) as Mrs. Roberts reflects on her life and faith through the stories of her life. The book is getting rave reviews and Missy will be here Friday, April 27th at 7 PM.

Your evening will include dinner and a signed copy of the book. Individuals are $25 and couples are $40. Let us know this week if you want to attend because we will be ordering the books in order to have them hear on time.

Here’s a suggestion – make this a Mother’s Day present! Bring your mother (or, moms, tell your kids to take you) for a fun and blessed evening out. Pass on another blouse or pair of slacks and instead feed your soul and fill your hearts. If your mom is too far away, come and get a book for her!
